Grand Canyon South Rim

On August 22nd & 23rd, 2016 I hiked the Grand Canyon's rim to rim trail from north to south with a friend. These images are from the top of the south rim before our hike began.

The Grand Canyon is a spectacular place. It's almost impossible to capture it in a photograph, and at the same time almost impossible to take a bad photograph. I returned home with hundreds of beautiful images. This is a selection of my favorites from the south rim.

The first images were taken on the evening of August 19th.
Looking East about 40 minutes prior to sunset. Clouds were moving in, and we weren't sure if we would see any color.
Growing storm activity visible in the east.
Canyon detail. I love the colors and textures.
The light changes moment to moment. With every glance you see something new.
The sun appeared below the clouds before disappearing for the day over the horizon. It lit up the canyon for a brief couple of minutes. This is a five frame pano stitched in Adobe Lightroom. The north rim trail where we would begin our hike, follows the canyon in the right half of the image.
Three bracket Lightroom HDR captured as the light began to disappear.
These are the sane people who stayed behind the railing to watch the sunset.
I call this "Stupid People Selfies".
This frame gives a better perspective for the stupid selfie people.
These last two images were captured in the morning before we took a shuttle van to the Grand Canyon Lodge on the north rim. If I was to make this trip again, I would better plan for sunset and sunrise photo ops.
Taken shortly after sunrise. We got up early for sunrise, but discovered too late that the ideal look out point was not in walking distance from the road. This is the best I captured.
This is near the Bright Angel Trail head where we would finish our hike two days later.
